The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
