Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
