No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
